DORANDA Doranda was a military centre and the Catholics were in majority from S. India during the British regime. In 1877 Fr. Ferdinand de Cock began to stay in a mud house. At the invitation of Fr. Fierens, he went to Buruma with a purpose to evangelize the Tribals. He proceeded to Jamgain and baptized some people there towards the end of 1880. Due to political upheaval, the Army battalion had to leave Doranda and move to Ramgarh. Fr. De Meulder contacted the Ramgarh Cantt p.o.w. Camp consisting of Italians. They took much interest for money and man power towards the building of the Church in Doranda. The map was drawn by an Italian architect. After the Second World War when they had to move from Ramgarh they handed over the map to Fr. De Meulder and provided finance. "It is to be remembered that the Church was built according to the will of those Italian soldiers who loved thier comrades buried here. They had personally dug the foundation and when they had to go back, financed the construction totally'. Doranda parish was started around 1940-45. The Church was blessed on 10.8.1952 by Fr. C. Durt. From then on faithful began to come for Mass and sacraments from Baragutu, Jamgain and Hulhundu. The Grotto was blessed on 11.2.59. The Loreto Nuns arrived here and begain to look after the Church and the sacristy. The Daughters of St. Anne took up catechism for the people and many were baptized in groups. In 1959 Mother Teresa Sisters was an impetus to the mission in Doranda and also in Chotanagpur. With the passage of time many other Congregations of Sisters arrived in Doranda and served the Church according to their charism and apostolate. This parish, today, can logitimately be proud of the presence of nine congregations of women with as many as eleven convents and two congregations of men. Priests 01.
