DAUGHTERS OF ST. ANNE, RANCHI

The Sisters of Loreto came to Ranchi on March 21, 1890 and began a boarding school for girls in their 'Red Lodge'.  Here Archbishop Paul Goethals, S.J. laid the foundation of an indigenous religious Congregation, the Daughters of St. Anne on July 26, 1897 on the Feast of St. Anne and St. Joachim.  Srs. Maria Bernadett, Cecilia, Veronica and Mary were the first four members of this local Congregation.  Archbishop Meuleman (1901-1920) began to open as many schools as possible for boys and girls in Chotanagpur and the DSA became an important agent.  The Ursulines Sisters of Tildonk replaced the Loretos in the Red Lodge on January 13, 1903, when they left Ranchi.  The newly founded Congregation was placed under the care of the Ursulines.  The DSA became a Congregation of the diocesan right in 1903, Sr. M. Bernadette was appointed as the Superior and Fr. Scharlaeken as the spiritual director.  The DSA still continued to depend on the Ursulines and also the Loretos, both for practical, spiritual and also financial support.  Finally, the four foundresses made their final profession on July 26, 1906 and the DSA became completely independent and self-sufficient.  The Daughters of St. Anne left the Red Lodge and entered their own present Mother House, Purulia Road, on October 19, 1939.  Thus the Loreto Sissters and the Ursulines after them were instrumental in the founding and progressive development of the Daughters of St. Anne.  At present the DSA commit themselves in education, health services, catechesis and assist in the parish mission activities.  At present they have more than 1050 members spread over 130 houses.  They are now active in 18 dioceses (including that of Padova in Italy).  Of all the sisters working in the Archdiocese they are the most numerous.  They became "of pontifical right" on April 8, 2002.
