INSTITUTE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The Loreto Sisters first came to Ranchi on March 21, 1890 and their convent, the Red Lodge on Purulia Road educated local Tribal girls. The Sisters prepared the girls for the receiption of the sacraments taught them practical skills in home making and held special marriage preparation classes. In time of famine and epidemics they rendered nursing service and cared for orphans. They were instrumental with the Bishop in setting up the Congregation of the Daughters of St. Anne. In 1903 the Loreto Sisters handed over the Red Lodge and their mission to the Ursuline Sisters. In 1942 Loreto Sisters returned to Ranchi to establish an English medium school at Doranda where boys and girls were prepared for the Indian School Certificate Examination. When St. Xavier's school Doranda was established in 1960 the boys left Loreto. The school continues to serve both Catholic and other students and now has a roll strength of 1600 of whom 700 are Catholics, mostly Adivasi children. Asha Kiran is a programme established some 8 years ago to cater to local children who do not go to school and to train young women in income-generating skills, mainly needlework, sewing, knitting, tailoring and embroidery.
