MANDAR Catholic Mission, Mandar, has its origin from the year 1888, when a big deputation of Uraons from this area went to Ranchi to meet Fr. Lievens who along with Fr. Haghenbeck, in charge of the mission at Dighia, visited Raghunathpur and the neighbouring villages. In 1890 Fr. Dumont started a temporary residence at Mandar but continued visiting it from Dighia. Fr. Walrave took care of this part of the mission from Dighia until 1897 when Fr. Bretaudeau started constructing a residence for the Fathers and a school at Mandar. These early years were a period of rich harvest due to mass movement, but they also suffered heavy loss due to apostasy chiefly because of lack of instruction and even more so, fear of the zamindars. Then came a great famine in 1900. In 1907 cholera broke out all over the mission with loss of population. Christian as well as non-Christians. Survey work in the Mandar Thana in 1908 restarted missionary works. In 1909 Father Hoffmann inaugurated his great scheme of the Co-operative Credit Society. Mandar was definitely separated in 1911 from Dighia with Fr. Bertels as the missionary in charge. Schools were organized. December 1912 was a great event for the whole mission: The visit of the Delegate Apostolic Mgr. Zaleski. People from all over the mission came to Ranchi to meet him and pay their homage to him. 1914 World War I broke out bringing in many evils and much human suffering - epidemic broke out - famine followed. 1917: was called 'France Labour Corps Year'. Hundreds were recruited. Many died in France or on the way. The effects lasted for many years. In 1930 Mandar Boys' U.P. was raised to Middle and the Girls' L.P. to U.P. Conversions continued in spite of opposition and obstacles from within and without. In the early 30 various committees were formed and Catholic Sabha was started. Boys' and Girls' central schools were improved, new buildings started, staff improved and increased, more catechists, convent is ready. Land survey and settlement in Mandar Thana took place in 1933. A strong earthquake in the year 1934 caused cracks in the Church. The outbreak of the World War II in Sept. 1939 brought untold misery and suffering, moral as well as physical. In 1945 Holy Family Hospital was started under the Medical Missionary Sisters. In 1948 Golden Jubilee of Mandar Mission was celebrated. In the sixties the new Church was erected and blessed.
