PATRACHAULI

The earliest missionaries did bring the faith to this area, in between Karra, Jamgain (now in Hulhundu parish), Dighia and Ranchi.  The villages here are hidden in the hills where the main rivers of Chotanagpur have their sources: Karo, Tajna, Kanchi, Subarnarekha and South koel.  Some of these villages are of the oldest of Chotanagpur: Purio, Panchdiha.  There were three tea-estates: Daladili (still existing), Piska and Bankuli.  The planter's bungalow at Bankuli was in 1915 the cradle of the seminary.  In Bankuli there remains now only the pond, the shady-trees and the plinth of the bungalow.

A property along the metalled road to the Itki Sanatorium, a marsh in the jungle was acquired during World War II by the then parish priest of Ranchi, Fr. Edw. De Meulder in the camp area of General Stilwell's armies getting ready for the reconquest of Burma.

Fr. De. Meulder and his successors at Ranchi, Frs. Van Roey and Binje, arranged for a monthly visiting priest for some 120 families.  This was much appreciated, i.e. by mothers bringing their newly born babies for baptism.

A school was started in 1947.  The Catholic laity faced the challenge of non-resident priest, and soon made of this school a big and a good school.  The middle school got recognition in 1954.

The buildings successively erected are the school, the bungalow and the church blessed on May 27, 1956.  The following year Fr. William Hodge came to take charge of Patrachauli, although, according to the catalogues, the parish as such started only in 1961.  The Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary came in Sept. 1970.  A Catholic Sabha High School was started in 1972.
