SOCIETY OF JESUS

The first Companions of Jesus, led by Ignatius of Loyola, took vows of poverty and chastity at Montmartre (Paris) on 15.08.1534.  The Society of Jesus was officially founded and approved on 27.09.1540.  Its members engage in a variety of ministriew like preaching, giving retreats, education, social service, scholarship, pastoral work, missions etc.  The Society is active in 126 countries in the world.

The first Belgian Jesuit to enter Chotanagpur was Fr. Auguste Stockman.  He traveled by bullock cart from Midnapur and after a difficult journey of a fortnight reached Chaibasa on November 25, 1868 for an exploratory visit.  He definitely settled down there on 10.07.1869.

On November 08, 1873, twenty-four adults and four children, all of them Mundas joined the Church at Khuntpani.  Their settling down at Tutui in June 1874 led to the development of the famous 'Quadrilateral': Burudi, Sarwada, Bandgaon and Dolda.

Fr. Constant Lievens arrived in Doranda late at night on March 18, 1885, and next day moved to Jamgain.  On November 23, 1885 he started a new mission station at Torpa, stil among the Mundas.  But the movement of grace soon spread among the Uraons and in March 1887 Ranchi Manresa House became the Headquarters of the Catholic Mission, still part of the Jesuit Mission of West Bengal or Archdiocese of Calcutta.

On 25.05.1927 Ranchi was separated from Calcutta and became the Diocese of Ranchi.  The Jesuits who continued working in Ranchi were given their own separate Superior Regular on October 10, 1935.  Eventually in 1953 they became an independent province.
